Session 5 Sneak Peek
Spark
Have you ever had a great idea that didn’t work the first time?
This session, Spark learners will explore entrepreneurship. Learners will consider what it means to try new things and how to embrace failure when things do not go as planned. As a community, we’ll ask the question: How can we grow and learn from great mistakes?
Learners will engage in hands-on experiences, discussions, and creative projects to develop a growth mindset. They will practice taking risks, staying curious, and persisting when faced with challenges as they build resilience and grow their creativity. We will explore how practice contributes to our growth and how mistakes can help us improve or adjust our ideas.
Learners will also take a field trip to the National History Museum to spark inspiration. Learners will conclude the session, bringing their products to life at the Business Fair during our Exhibition of Learning.
Discovery
Have you ever faced a problem that sparked an idea for a product or business? Us too! This session, Discovery will step into the shoes of an entrepreneur and learn what it takes to turn those ideas into reality! Learners will engage in creative problem solving, leaning on their growth mindset to persevere through challenges. Learners will reflect on problems facing their community and work to build a business that will bring positive changes to the world. Through Project and Writer’s Workshop, learners will collaborate with one another to brainstorm, plan, create, and pitch a business idea that they believe is worth investing in.
Adventure
This session, learners will use their voices to ignite ideas and spark action in their communities. Modeled after Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, learners will examine issues important to them, brainstorm solutions, draft, revise, and deliver 10-minute speeches that take bold stances and propose real-world solutions.
Learners will continue exploring the natural world through the Biomimicry Youth Design Challenge. Now that they have spent time identifying a real-world problem, they will expand on their innovation ideas, thoroughly investigate their solution’s connection to the natural world, create a portfolio presentation to tell the story of their design, and build a prototype.
Health & Wellness
This session, learners explore the concepts of stress and anxiety - what they are, why they occur, and how they affect individuals in different ways. We examine how stress and anxiety show up in our daily life, including physical, emotional and behavioral signs. Learners will practice evidence-based coping strategies and develop personalized plans to manage stress and anxiety in healthy ways.
