Session 4 Sneak Peek

SPARK STUDIO

This session Spark learners will explore how music helps us tell our stories. From Beethoven to Beyonce, learners will explore the history of music, listen to various types of music, and learn about different instruments, including the guitar, tuba, piano, and xylophone.

Learners will utilize their creativity through sound, movement, and writing as they notice and reflect on the music they hear, connecting it to their own experiences. Spark learners will also engage in hands-on projects such as record design, piano making, note necklaces, and art. We’ll conclude the session with a field trip to Westover Library.

DISCOVERY STUDIO

Take a moment and think of your favorite game that you play on repeat, whether as a child, or in your family. Was it Monopoly? Yahtzee? The Game of Life? Sorry? Candyland? Maybe it wasn’t a board game at all but instead a card game you learned from someone else and you have to refresh your memory on the instructions every time you play. In Project this session, Discovery Studio will explore probability and game design. Learners will work  to explore probability through games of luck, strategy, and skill. They will then apply these concepts as they work to create their own board game! Learners will also get opportunities to play various group games that involve skills such as movement, strategy, memorization, listening, observation, and focus. Together, they will take inspiration from the games played to create new group games that can be played as a studio, whether inside, on the playground, or at the park. By the end of the session, you might have a new favorite game created by a group of young people that you can share with others!

In this session's Writer's Workshop, learners will explore the fundamental aspects of journalism, from researching and interviewing to writing and editing. Through engaging launches, discussions, and practical exercises, learners will develop the skills needed to craft their own news articles. By the end of the session, each learner will publish an article to be shared with the school community, showcasing their ability to inform and inspire their audience as journalists.

ADVENTURE STUDIO

In this session, Adventure learners will develop their creative writing skills as they craft original pieces in genres such as poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction. They’ll experiment with powerful techniques like show, don’t tell, revise with peer feedback, and learn that strong writing doesn’t happen all at once. Ultimately, learners will take a brave leap by submitting one of their written pieces to a magazine and celebrating writing as a process that encompasses rejection and resilience.

Learners will also delve into the natural world to explore how nature inspires human innovation. Using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a guiding lens, they will identify a real-world problem that matters locally or globally. As part of the Biomimicry Youth Design Challenge, learners will design, prototype, and refine a nature-inspired solution to address that challenge.
