Exploring North America as a Community in Spark

In the opening days of Session 6, learners are exploring all of the amazing things that make up North America. Older Spark learners kicked off our discussion by giving the studio lessons on the sand and colored globes, highlighting their differences, how they help us learn about the world, and what makes the continents unique. Learners also gave lessons on the colorful puzzle map of the United States of America and discussed information about the fifty states. Learners reflected on the following questions: What makes North America unique, and what makes your community fun? Spark learners shared their thoughts.

I like that I live in WDC and it's the capital of the US.

We can take care of our family. You can always play with your friends.

Freedom of voice

You always have everything you need to survive.

The United States is fun. Lots of places to visit.

Our week continued to gain momentum as learners began to build their communities using recyclables, pipe cleaners, colored tape, and other materials. Their inquisitive minds began to wonder. How might my community look, and who is included? The cutting and bending of cardboard and tissue paper began, and learners were busy bringing their ideas to life.

Using their creativity, learners designed homes, trees, animals, food, plants, and even microscopes, making their part of the community their own. As they collaborated, this purposeful activity not only highlighted their independence but also demonstrated their teamwork, as each learner considered how their creations connected with others' to build a thriving community.

By the end of the week, learners were discovering their place within it, making connections between the world they see and the communities they help create every day. As Spark continues to study the different continents this session, we can’t wait to see how their curiosity grows as they learn about new places, cultures, and perspectives. We wonder how this newfound knowledge will help to shape who they are becoming.
