DISCOVERY STUDIO
Where learners become
problem-solvers, not test-takers.
Learners in Discovery Studio further develop a love of learning and kindness in relationships with others. Reading and math are mastery-based and learner-led using adaptive technology. Learners explore the arts, sciences, and social studies through exploratory projects that require teamwork, critical thinking and creativity. Meanwhile, plenty of free play binds the community together and fosters problem solving and collaboration.
The average elementary school offers 25 minutes of recess per day. Discovery learners spend 2+ hours daily outside and twice-weekly 3-hour blocks at the local park exploring fields, woods, and creeks. This screen-free time builds community, fosters creativity, and environmental connection.
Learners earn badges, not grades, once they show mastery in an area of learning. This mastery-based system creates space for mistakes, reflection, and a cycle of continuous learning, character development, and grit.
Our dynamic studio gives learners agency to choose their learning environment — big collaborative tables, quiet comfortable seating, desks, floor space, or anywhere that supports their ability to find flow.
Discovery learners engage in projects that explore various STEAM topics. These experiences create spaces that require teamwork, critical thinking, and creativity, while providing opportunities to connect with the local community.
Play is the work of the child — and we take that seriously. Twice a week, Discovery learners spend three-hour blocks at the local park: playing sports, wading through creeks, building forts, and simply being kids. Research is clear that unstructured play builds creativity, resilience, and social intelligence in ways no worksheet can. We’re not just letting kids play. We’re preserving childhood.
How do we measure learning in Discovery Studio?
As learners grow in Discovery Studio, we’re watching for more than academic progress. We’re tracking curiosity, resilience, creativity, and collaboration — traits in our Profile of a Learner that will serve them long after the math facts are forgotten.
